Dryer Vent Cleaning should be performed on a regular schedule to ensure the proper and safe function of your dryer. As lint and debris builds up in the dryer vent, the dryer has to work harder to move the exhaust air through the vent. The extra effort creates more heat that can build up in the dryer and may either cause premature failure of the dryer motor or can even cause a fire.
Having your dryer vent cleaned about once per year is a good time frame to plan on. Some of the variables that can cause your dryer vent to plug up faster are:
- The length of the dryer vent run. The shorter the better.
- The number of bends or turns in the vent run. The fewer turns the better. Each turn is a potential place for lint to gather and for air flow to slow down and cause a back up.
- The type of covering or cap at the outside of the vent. You want a cover/cap that will allow the air to flow freely out, but not allow animals, rodents or birds to get in and make a home.
- The material the dryer vent is made from. You want a smooth metal pipe for best results. Some homes have flexible tubing made of plastic or metal instead of smooth metal. These flex tubings have ridges on the inside which catch lint and debris as it flows past and this can lead to a dam building up inside. They are usually not as durable as well and can be easily torn or pierced.
If you keep your dryer vent flowing freely you are less likely to have issues with your dryer burning up the motor or causing a fire from overheating. Call us today if you have questions about getting your dryer vent cleaned or repaired. 801-784-0099
